Epic and CD Projekt Red just dropped a Witcher 4 tech demo that left jaws on the floor—and not just for the snowy peaks of Kovir. Running on Unreal Engine 5.6, the demo hit 60 FPS with ray tracing on a base PlayStation 5, but the real stars were three next-gen features:
First, Nanite Foliage transformed environments like never before. Forget blurry trees in the distance—every pine needle in Kovir’s forests rendered in razor-sharp detail, dynamically reacting to wind and Ciri’s movement without melting the console. Nanite’s magic? It streams geometric detail on-the-fly, so distant mountains and close-up bark use only the pixels needed. No more “pop-in” hell.

Then came ML Deformer Muscle: a tech demo exclusive showing Ciri’s horse, Kelpie, with eerily realistic muscle flexing under its skin as it galloped. Using machine learning, the system simulates tissue, tendons, and fat layers in real-time—making beasts feel alive, not like animatronic props. Roach who?
Finally, Mass AI Crowd turned Lan Exeter’s port into a living city. NPCs didn’t just shuffle mindlessly; they docked ships, hauled crates, and reacted to Ciri’s presence. Pathfinding avoided collisions naturally, and Epic hinted crowds could number in the thousands without tanking performance.
Fans cheered the tech (especially Kelpie’s "abs"), but skepticism lingered: "Beautiful, but can CDPR deliver this at launch?" Devs stressed collaboration—Epic’s Tim Sweeney called it "open-world tech pushed to madness," while CDPR teased "ambition meeting polish." Still, with a 2027 release window, hope—and doubt—runs wild.
