The Project Ascension, one of the largest private World of Warcraft emulators still active, officially announced that it will shut down all its realms on September 4, 2026, at 7pm Pacific Time. The decision was revealed by the project leader, known as Dutch, who described the outcome as part of a "mutual agreement" between the team and Blizzard Entertainment. The announcement marks the end of nearly ten years of operation for a server that became famous for allowing free combination of classes and abilities, something unprecedented in the original MMO. The news was confirmed by outlets such as MMO-Champion and PCGamesN, which reported the team's official message.

The shutdown does not happen in isolation. Blizzard filed a lawsuit against Project Ascension in June 2026, just weeks after reaching an agreement with Turtle WoW, another large private server. The action, filed in the federal court of the Central District of California, included charges of copyright infringement, DMCA violations, and even allegations of connection to the Aeza Group, a company sanctioned by the US Treasury. Despite the severity of the accusations, the agreement now announced indicates that Blizzard prioritized a quick shutdown of the service rather than a prolonged legal battle, as noted by MMOHuts in its analysis.

With the end of the World of Warcraft realms, the Project Ascension team stated that all development will be directed toward a new project, entirely original and unrelated to Blizzard or any of its franchises. The official website, social media, and project launcher will be adapted for this new endeavor. The move follows the same path as Turtle WoW, whose developers announced plans to create their own MMO after the agreement with Blizzard. For fans of private servers, the expectation remains that these teams will channel their creativity into legal and sustainable projects, while Blizzard continues to tighten the noose on any unauthorized operation of its games.
